The Imposition of Network Spending Caps

network spending caps

Network spending caps: Open letter to all our clients on mobile contracts.

Dear Client,

Re failed messages:

Here’s the thing, a network spending cap has kicked in from your network’s side (not from ours).

What are spending caps and why does your network restrict your ability to use certain services?

On 13 January 2018, a new piece of legislation came into force in the UK. The legislation is known as the Payment Services Directive or “PSD2”.  PSD2 was adopted by the UK government as a consequence of an EU Directive, aimed at providers of credit – i.e. banks, financial institutions and others that provide consumer credit.

Unfortunately, PSD2 legislation also captures all mobile network operators, as they too effectively provide credit to their account customers.  The unintended consequence of PSD2 is that mobile (credit account) clients are faced with the imposition of having their accounts capped… whether they like it or not. These spending caps apply to all mobile networks and to every credit account customer. PSD2 spending caps are ‘automatic’ and don’t take account of an individual’s financial situation, bill-payment history or wishes.

Network spending caps are arbitrary and, therefore, grossly unfair

Avoid the frustration and imposition of your network blocking private messages being delivered to your mobile. Switch to using pre-payment chat credits.  Pre-payment chat credits have a number of benefits. One big benefit to you is there’s no mobile billing involved, so PSD2 spending caps don’t apply.  Another benefit is that the Service Contribution Rate or “SCR” is less when using pre-payment chat credits.  This means that via pre-payment chat credits you will save money.  Precisely how much you save will depend on the number of chat credits you want.

To avoid the imposition of having to put up with daily and monthly network spending caps – and save yourself money at the same time – pre-payment chat credits are definitely the way to go.  The service works exactly the same, but there’s no mobile billing or spending caps to contend with. Any unused chat credits automatically roll over to the following month.  No direct debit is required. You simply buy credits as and when you like.  To opt for chat credits please get in touch with us via the contact page and we’ll let you have the details you need.

If anything is unclear, or you still have a question about [network] spending caps or PSD2, please contact us.

The benefits to you of opting for pre-payment chat credits

The benefits of pre-payment chat credits over mobile billing make them a no-brainier and simply the smart choice!

NB: When a network spending cap is applied, please be aware that we will not be able to contact the person you are chatting with, on your behalf.  This is because it would amount to a serious breach of our strict policy on privacy and data protection.

What can I do if a spending cap is imposed on my account under PSD2 rules?

Switch to pre-payment chat credits – this will allow you to continue your chat session without interruption.  Otherwise, you will just have to ‘wait-it-out’ until the spending cap is lifted at midnight [in respect of daily spending caps] or until the start of the next calendar month [in the event of a monthly spending cap].

Happy days with chat credits and play safe,
Emma
